HAYWARD, Calif. - Californer -- Fruit Eating at Night
Dr.Abhay Kumar Pati, Physician, Author Researcher

According to Ayurveda, eating fruit at night is generally discouraged because the body's digestive fire, or Agni, is weakest in the evening. The slower metabolism at night can cause the natural sugars in fruit to ferment in the stomach, leading to digestive issues like bloating, gas, and heaviness.
The rationale for avoiding fruit at night is based on the following Ayurvedic principles:
  • Weakened digestion: The body's natural digestive rhythm is strongest during the day, particularly midday, and slows down in the evening to prepare for rest. Consuming raw, cold, or high-sugar fruit during this time can overwhelm the digestive system.
  • Kapha dosha: The late evening is naturally dominated by the Kapha dosha, which is associated with heavy, cool, and slow qualities. Sweet fruits have a similar Kapha-increasing effect, and eating them at night can further increase Kapha, leading to sluggishness, mucus production, and weight gain.
  • Energy and sleep disruption: Fruits are simple carbohydrates that provide a quick energy boost. Eating them close to bedtime can cause a spike in blood sugar levels, which may disrupt your sleep schedule.
  • Toxin accumulation (Ama): When fruits ferment in the digestive tract instead of being properly digested, it can lead to the formation of Ama (toxins). This can contribute to various health issues over time.

Ayurveda takes a personalized approach, and the guidelines can be adjusted based on an individual's constitution (dosha) and specific fruit. Certain fruits are considered easier to digest and less likely to cause issues in the evening:
