Over 7000 women and gender-nonconforming people have engaged the organization to find jobs, advice, community and belonging over the last four years.
LOS ANGELES - Californer -- With more than ten programs, eight festival partnerships, three national tours, and over 200 job or paid gig placements, Girls Behind The Rock Show (GBTRS) is celebrating four years of being the change that the music industry so desperately needs.
What began as founder Shelby Chargin's dream of pointing out and breaking down barriers for women and gender-nonconforming people in the music industry has grown into a massive and valuable resource for over 7000 members of a primarily online community known as 'GBTRS: Music Industry Networking Group'. This is where Shelby and her team discuss, promote and actively recruit for the more than 10 programs they have built to help female-identifying people build careers in the music and entertainment industry. Chargin notes, "After four years of consistently learning and growing, GBTRS has allowed me to see that young women and gender-nonconforming people aren't lacking experience or value, just opportunity. By creating an open-discussion forum community where people aren't shackled by fears of asking "dumb questions" or violating professionalism when it comes to learning in the early stages of their careers, I've found that when we band together as women who want to create an equal opportunity community, we can build the industry we want to see from the ground up. While the glass ceiling may have been shattered in some ways, we're looking to smooth the edges, and get rid of the lingering fragments that continue to wound women and gender-nonconforming people on their way to the top".
