~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has announced the start of construction for a new affordable housing project in the Midtown area. The project, called 1400 Long Beach, is a six-story development by Meta Housing that will provide 163 units for low-income individuals and families.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held this morning and was attended by Mayor Rex Richardson, along with other city officials and executives from Meta Housing and Bank of America. The event featured a ceremonial shovel-turning of dirt to commemorate the start of construction.
"We are thrilled to begin construction for this exciting project in Midtown," said Mayor Richardson. "It carries on our commitment to prioritizing affordable housing options for our community, as we continue to produce affordable housing at record levels. And because of this great project, 163 Central Long Beach families will have stability and better opportunities to thrive."

The development will be located on a formerly vacant commercial lot at its namesake address of 1400 Long Beach Blvd. It will consist of one-, two- and three-bedroom units and will feature amenities such as a community room, an outdoor courtyard, and a children's play area.
"This development activates a vacant site with much-needed quality, affordable housing and enhances the livability of the community," said Sixth District Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro. "I am proud that Council District 6 continues to contribute to increasing housing availability while revitalizing neighborhoods."
The project is expected to be completed by mid-2026 and represents an $87.6 million investment into the Midtown community. It will provide rental units for low and extremely low-income households earning between 30 to 70 percent of the area median income (AMI).
This is not the only affordable housing project that the City has supported this year. Two other projects, 26 Point 2 near the Traffic Circle and Wellspring in Cambodia Town, have already opened their doors earlier this year. The City is committed to fast-tracking efforts to support the building of safe, quality housing for residents across all income levels and increasing the feasibility of development on underused sites throughout the city.
