Long Beach, CA ~ The City of Long Beach has appointed Grace H. Yoon as Deputy City Manager, a role she will begin on October 7th, 2023. Ms. Yoon will work alongside the City Manager and Assistant City Manager to implement the policies and programs of the City Council.
City Manager Tom Modica expressed his enthusiasm for Ms. Yoon's appointment, saying "Grace is a talented, dedicated City leader whose hard work and leadership has steered our organization through financial resiliency, fostered a culture of community engagement within our budgeting process, and has a heart that genuinely cares for the community of which we serve. I look forward to her stepping into this role and her leadership as a Deputy City Manager."
As Deputy City Manager, Ms. Yoon will collaborate with department directors to ensure that the Council's policies are implemented and that departments are working together to meet the needs of the community. She will also oversee the Office of Governmental Affairs, Office of Cannabis Oversight, and implementation of the Strategic Visioning Plan. Additionally, she will provide leadership in other areas such as economic development, public safety, hiring, and homelessness.

Ms. Yoon has been employed with Long Beach since 2007 and most recently served as Budget Manager for the Department of Financial Management since 2018 where she was responsible for managing and administering an annual budget of $3.2 billion dollars as well as long range financial forecasting and planning. She holds a master's degree in Public Administration from New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Psychological Services from Northwestern University.
Geraldine Alejo will take over as Acting Budget Manager once Ms. Yoon begins her new role as Deputy City Manager while Tyler Bonanno-Curley resumes his duties overseeing Government Affairs for the City when Ms. Yoon fully steps into her role in December after a transition period with the Budget Office until December 1st 2023 . The recruitment process for this position began on June 5th 2023 with over 200 candidates expressing interest in it before Ms Yoon was identified as top candidate based on her work experience and education after a thorough multi-step panel interview process with representatives from local governments businesses etc..
