Long Beach, CA ~ At the 2025 California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) Conference in Napa, California, the City of Long Beach was recognized for its exceptional communication efforts with six top awards. The City received four Excellence in Public Information and Communications (EPIC) Awards, the highest honor bestowed by CAPIO to any public organization. In addition, the City was named this year's Best in Show, a prestigious distinction given to only four projects of varying budget sizes.

The City's Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his pride in the recognition, stating that it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the public information teams. He also emphasized the City's commitment to transparency, engagement, and effective communication with its community.

One of the City's EPIC Awards was for its InsideLB blog post titled "Celebrating the Conflict: Mildred's Story," which was part of their People First: Voices of Homelessness campaign. This series, launched in 2023 as part of the City's response to local homelessness emergency, aims to humanize and bring empathy to conversations surrounding homelessness. The winning blog post featured Mildred, a 78-year-old woman who experienced homelessness for 14 months after a house fire. Her story highlights her strength and resilience as she worked with the City's Homeless Services Bureau to secure permanent housing. Today, at 90 years old, Mildred leads tango classes at Wardlow Park. This heartwarming story received CAPIO's Best in Show award for projects under $5,000.
