Long Beach, CA ~ At the 2025 California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) Conference in Napa, California, the City of Long Beach was recognized for its exceptional communication efforts with six top awards. The City received four Excellence in Public Information and Communications (EPIC) Awards, the highest honor bestowed by CAPIO to any public organization. In addition, the City was named this year's Best in Show, a prestigious distinction given to only four projects of varying budget sizes.
The City's Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his pride in the recognition, stating that it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the public information teams. He also emphasized the City's commitment to transparency, engagement, and effective communication with its community.
One of the City's EPIC Awards was for its InsideLB blog post titled "Celebrating the Conflict: Mildred's Story," which was part of their People First: Voices of Homelessness campaign. This series, launched in 2023 as part of the City's response to local homelessness emergency, aims to humanize and bring empathy to conversations surrounding homelessness. The winning blog post featured Mildred, a 78-year-old woman who experienced homelessness for 14 months after a house fire. Her story highlights her strength and resilience as she worked with the City's Homeless Services Bureau to secure permanent housing. Today, at 90 years old, Mildred leads tango classes at Wardlow Park. This heartwarming story received CAPIO's Best in Show award for projects under $5,000.

The Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) also received an EPIC Award for their creative use of social media with their "So Much to Do at the Library - Say Less" Instagram Reel. The Reel was created in October 2024 to attract a younger audience and showcase all the free resources available at LBPL. It quickly went viral and has gained over 5.4 million views and 12,200 new followers for the Library's Instagram page.
Long Beach Airport (LGB) was recognized with an EPIC Award for their Centennial Poster Series, which was distributed at the grand reopening of LGB's Historic Terminal in 2024. The posters, designed in a vintage style, pay tribute to the airport's century of service and were also given out at LGB's annual Festival of Flight. In addition, LGB received an Award of Distinction for their 1920s-themed public celebration of the Grand Reopening of the Historic Terminal. The event garnered extensive media coverage and reached an estimated audience of over 586,000 people.
The Department of Public Works also received an EPIC Award for their innovative Food Waste Prevention campaign led by the Environmental Services Bureau (ESB). This campaign included interactive events, engaging social media content, and bilingual giveaways such as a Produce Storage Guide and Eat This First mini sign. A highlight of this initiative was the Food Storage Activity game that educated residents on proper produce storage techniques to reduce food waste. This campaign showcases the City's commitment to sustainability and empowering its community.
