Long Beach: Honoring 1,000 Lives

It has been 17 long months since Long Beach experienced our first cases of COVID-19. Today, we learned that 1,000 people in our community have died from this terrible virus. The pandemic has had unimaginable impacts and caused the most devastating loss of life in our city's history. My heart goes out to the hundreds of families that have lost a loved one during this crisis.

I know the pain that comes with loss, especially given how quickly this virus acts — and no one should ever have to go through that. We must cherish the memories of the people who've died and celebrate the lives they led.

Earlier this year, I asked the city to begin the process of creating a memorial in remembrance of those who lost their lives to COVID-19. No matter how or when this pandemic is finally defeated, Long Beach deserves a focal point for people to express their grief, mourn for everyone and come together as a community.

This coming Monday, Sept. 20, at 11 AM, many city leaders will gather to remember, honor and hold a moment of silence for those we've lost. The program will be available on Facebook, Twitter and LBTV.

Lastly, I ask that everyone who has not been vaccinated, please do so. If not for yourself, consider doing it for a friend, family member or a neighbor who might be especially susceptible to the virus. We owe it to the loved ones of the 1,000 friends, family and neighbors who have died — and we have a responsibility to protect our community by keeping ourselves and those around us safe and healthy.
