Nationwide Essay Contest to Sharpen Thinking Skills

OTTAWA, Ontario - Californer -- Focusing on the theme "Religion and Humanism in Canadian Education", Humanist Canada and the Association humaniste du Québec are co-hosting an essay contest open to high school students16 to 19 years old. The contest offers a first prize of $1,000, second prize of $750, third prize of $500 and up to five honorable mention prizes of $50 for a total of $5,000 shared equally between English and French essays.

"This year's contest gently challenges young writers to passionately express their ideas in a coherent, informed, and persuasive manner." said Dr. Lloyd Robertson, Vice-president of Humanist Canada. "In a media rich world where making evidence-based arguments is increasingly important, practice in critical thinking skills is essential. I openly invite any journalist to speak directly with me on the educational benefits of our contest."

Humanist Canada Essay Contest Committee member, Richard Thain said, "Each generation discovers enlightenment values in their own way and applies them to their own issues. Our expert panel of judges are keenly interested in seeing how young, fresh perspectives can be brought to bear on humanism in relation to the Canadian educational system."

We encourage emerging young writers to explore the wealth of specific essay topics that connect to the overarching theme while remaining consistent with humanist values across Canada. Concours pancanadien de dissertation pour aiguiser la capacité de réflexion

Montréal, Québec  - Axé sur le thème «Religion et humanisme dans l'éducation canadienne», Humanist Canada et l'Association humaniste du Québec co-organisent un concours de rédaction ouvert aux élèves du secondaire et des Cegeps de 16 à 19 ans. Le concours offre un premier prix de 1 000 $, un deuxième prix de 750 $, un troisième prix de 500 $ et jusqu'à cinq mentions honorables dotés de 50 $ pour un total de 5 000 $ répartis également entre les essais en anglais et en français.

«Le concours de cette année met les jeunes écrivains au défi d'exprimer avec passion leurs idées de manière cohérente, informée et persuasive.» a déclaré le Dr Lloyd Robertson, vice-président de Humanist Canada. «Dans un monde riche en médias où il est de plus en plus important de présenter des arguments fondés sur des évidences, l'exercice à la pensée critique est essentiel. J'invite tout journaliste intéressé à discuter directement avec moi des avantages pédagogiques de notre concours.»

Richard Thain, membre du comité du concours de rédaction d'Humanist Canada, a déclaré: «Chaque génération découvre les valeurs des Lumières à sa manière et les applique à ses propres problèmes. Notre panel de juges experts est vivement intéressé à voir comment des perspectives jeunes et nouvelles sur l'humanisme peuvent être mises à contribution en relation avec le système éducatif canadien.»

Nous encourageons les jeunes écrivains potentiels à explorer les sujets de dissertation possibles à l'intérieur du thème général, tout en restant cohérent avec les valeurs humanistes pancanadiennes.
