Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The city of Long Beach is gearing up for the upcoming READY Long Beach Community Preparedness Expo, set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025. The event, organized by the Long Beach Fire Department, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications, in partnership with other city departments, regional disaster response agencies, and community partners, aims to educate community members on how to prepare for natural disasters and other emergencies.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, "Emergencies can happen at any time, and READY Long Beach is a one-stop shop that helps ensure our community is better prepared for when they occur." He encourages families and neighbors to attend this free event and learn directly from experts about emergency preparedness. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Long Beach City College Veterans Memorial Stadium parking lot.
Over a dozen city departments and various disaster response agencies will participate in the expo. Attendees can expect information booths, emergency preparedness demonstrations, emergency food and supplies for purchase, a kids' fun zone, and emergency response vehicles. The expo aims to provide valuable information on gathering and storing essential survival tools, taking action to increase preparedness, building evacuation plans for families, engaging neighbors in disaster planning, recognizing hazards in living spaces, and accessing training and volunteer opportunities.

The event is open to the public with a welcome ceremony featuring city leaders scheduled for 11 a.m. Complimentary parking will be available at the venue. "READY Long Beach empowers our community with the knowledge and resources to respond confidently in emergencies," says Long Beach Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan. He emphasizes the fire department's commitment to building a safer and more prepared Long Beach.
READY Long Beach has been an annual event since its inception in 2014 but was put on hold for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will now take place biennially. "The READY Long Beach Expo is about empowering our residents to take practical, proactive steps toward preparedness," says Reggie Harrison, Director of the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications. He adds that by bringing together disaster preparedness experts from various city departments, regional partners, and community organizations, the event aims to make it easier for families to access tools, resources, and information that can save lives and mitigate property damage during an emergency.

In addition to the expo, the city also commemorated National Preparedness Month earlier this month with a month-long educational outreach and social media campaign. They also relaunched the Ready Your Long Beach Neighborhood program, which encourages disaster planning at the neighborhood level by offering trainings and resources to neighborhood group representatives. The city has several events planned for October to help residents get prepared for natural disasters and other emergencies, including the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025.
