TAIPEI, Nov. 13, 2024 ~ The Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI) made a significant impact at the 2024 World Design Capital (WDC) event, held in San Diego, USA from November 11-15. As the first cross-border event for WDC, San Diego and Tijuana co-hosted under the theme "Beyond Boundaries – Design a Better World," with a focus on human-centered design and international collaboration. TDRI joined forces with global design leaders to explore how design can drive urban and social innovation.

One of the highlights of the event was the Taipei Night hosted by TDRI at the InterContinental San Diego. This event brought together design experts from around the world for an evening of networking and showcasing TDRI's efforts in global design collaboration against California's stunning skyline. The Taipei Night was also included as a WDC Finale Week activity, further solidifying TDRI's contribution to connecting the international design community.

During this event, TDRI signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with prestigious institutions such as the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), UC San Diego, The Design Academy, and Mexico's CETYS Universidad. These partnerships demonstrate TDRI's commitment to cross-disciplinary innovation and its dedication to promoting global design collaboration.

Prominent attendees at Taipei Night included New Taipei City's Deputy Secretary-General Kung Ya-Wen, Mai Nguyen from UC San Diego's The Design Lab, renowned designers Patricia Moore and Don Norman, WDO President Thomas Garvey, and officials from Los Angeles' Economic and Cultural Office. Representatives from WDC 2024, 2026FRM, as well as leaders from various industries such as AI and government officials from countries like the Philippines also enriched this gathering. Through these engagements, TDRI provided a robust platform for sharing insights within the international design community.

Another significant moment for TDRI was their participation in WDC 2024 Beyond Boundaries Design Policy Conference, where Vice President of R&D Shyhnan LIOU presented the institute's research on the Contextualizing: City Design Power Index Model. This presentation sparked discussions with experts from the United States, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Germany, showcasing Taiwan's design prowess on a global scale.

TDRI was also recognized at the Don Norman Design Award ceremony for its contributions to the global design community and its dedication to showcasing Taiwan's design excellence. This award further solidifies TDRI's position as a leader in the international design community.

Representing WDC 2016 Taipei, TDRI and Deputy Secretary-General Kung also participated in the City Network Meeting, where they shared Taipei's achievements in sustainable development, urban regeneration, and quality of life. They highlighted recent TDRI initiatives that have made a significant impact on public service and social innovation. New Taipei City also shared examples of urban improvements achieved through design, further strengthening Taiwan's position in global urban design.

Through these initiatives, TDRI continues to promote impactful knowledge exchange and drive transformative design projects across industries.
