LOS ANGELES, Oct. 9, 2024 ~ Los Angeles-based publisher Cali's Books has teamed up with Mexican film producer, activist, and now author Olga Segura to release a new Spanish-language sound book just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month. The book, titled Contemos, is based on the traditional Latin American nursery rhyme "Un Elefante Se Balanceaba" and is sure to be a hit with young readers.
With six pages of hand-drawn illustrations, Spanish lyrics, and playful English prompts, Contemos offers an immersive experience for children and their parents. The book also features buttons that allow readers to hear each Spanish verse, making it a fun and interactive learning tool.
Segura was inspired to create this bilingual book by her own 3-year-old child. As someone who lives in the United States, she wanted to create something that she and her child could enjoy together while also promoting bilingualism.

But Contemos is more than just a counting book. It also carries an important message about teamwork, community, and collective joy. Each elephant in the story invites another to join in on the fun, emphasizing the value of working together and finding joy in each other's company.
In addition to its educational benefits such as teaching children how to count to five in Spanish and building their vocabulary, Contemos also reinforces important skills like fine motor skills as children press buttons and turn pages.
This collaboration between Cali's Books and Segura aligns with her mission to center Latinx voices and stories. She is known for co-founding The Latinx House, creating the ADELANTE Directors Fellowship, and co-founding Poderistas – all initiatives aimed at empowering the next generation of Latinas. Segura recently made her debut as a producer, writer, and director with her animated short film "ELEFANTA que ninguna se quede balanceándose sola."
Contemos is now available for purchase through Cali's Books' website. With its catchy nursery rhyme, beautiful illustrations, and important message, it is sure to be a favorite among young readers and their families.
