~ San Francisco, CA - United Playaz, a prominent organization focused on violence prevention and community development, is set to host its Annual Gun Buyback Event this Saturday, December 14. The event will take place from 8am-12pm PT and coincides with National Gun Buyback Day as well as the 12th anniversary of the tragic Sandy Hook shooting.
In collaboration with the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), local gun violence prevention groups, and STIIIZY, the nation's leading cannabis brand, this event aims to reduce the number of firearms in circulation and prevent gun violence across the city. Particularly for youth, this initiative hopes to change the narrative around community-led gun violence prevention.
As in previous years, individuals who turn in their firearms will receive $100 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons with no questions asked. The event encourages community members who no longer want or need their firearms to turn them in anonymously and safely. This effort will contribute to creating a safer San Francisco for everyone. The goal for this year's event is to collect 500 firearms off the streets in honor of the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting. Once collected, all guns will be destroyed and melted down. The parts will then be recycled to create jewelry and other goods that will be sold to finance future gun buy-backs.

Since 2010, United Playaz has been hosting annual gun buyback events which have resulted in over 2,500 weapons being taken off the streets. This initiative is made possible through partnerships with local government officials, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders. STIIIZY has been a supporter of this program since 2020 and has pledged $10,000 this year - totaling $40,000 donated overall. In addition to their financial contribution, STIIIZY employees will also volunteer at the event. Additional funding was raised by Pierce's Pledge, a non-profit organization focused on gun violence prevention and keeping children safe from gun violence by promoting responsible gun storage.
Rudy Corpuz Jr., Executive Director of United Playaz, stated, "We're offering a way for people to take guns out of homes and off the streets, reducing the risk of violence and tragedy." He also added, "Every year, we work with the San Francisco Police Department and local gun violence prevention partners to organize a gun buyback. We also ensure that all firearms are destroyed and are never recycled back into the community. We don't sell guns for parts or profit. People's lives are more important than any dollar. Thanks to the support from STIIIZY and Pierce's Pledge, we are able to fund this vital program and continue our efforts to make our streets safer."
