The natural wine collective to feature skin contact wines, curated from around the world
SAN FRANCISCO - Californer -- You've tried red, white, and maybe even orange... but have you ever tried a black wine? Accounting for just 0.1% of the world's wine production, "black grapes" contain 4 times the amount of pigment compounds, known as anthocyanins, that you'll find in a typical red grape.
This month, the boutique natural wine club, Unrooted, is celebrating the spooky season by delivering their favorite black & orange wines, paired to everyone's favorite Halloween candy, to members' doorsteps.
Black wines are dark, inky reds that come from only four types of grapes: Saperavi, Tannat, Negrette and a one kind of Malbec from Cahors, France.
These wines spend months to years soaking up their skins' juicy pigment. Red wine grapes, by contrast, are typically crushed and left to sit with their skins for only 7 to 14 days. The extra time that black wines spend on their skins also introduces oxygen into the mix, which helps to relax and soften the big, firm tannins typically found in these grapes. "You get a bold and beautiful wine with a unique ability to match rich foods like foie gras, black truffle, game meat, and sweets," says Unrooted founder & sommelier Joel Kampfe.

"We are excited to feature natural winemakers who make some of the best black wines in the world," says Kampfe. "Their biodynamic farming and experimentation with open cask fermentation creates bold and drinkable wines full verve. As for the orange wines in this month's shipment, well, that's a surprise."
