It begins in 1980, when a twenty-one-year-old Fred Moss walked onto a locked psychiatric ward in Pontiac, Michigan, for what was supposed to be three weeks of orientation pay – and stayed five years. Over the decades that followed, he worked across many states and in many capacities – clinics, outpatient settings, rehab units, inpatient wards, and prisons – watching what happened when someone stopped treating the diagnosis and started seeing the person. Along the way he survived two car accidents, an aortic dissection, a challenge to his medical license, and the final firing he experienced as freedom.
