MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Californer -- American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine has launched an International Track, which allows students to complete the Pre-Clinical Sciences in Antigua, West Indies, before returning to the UK for clinical training. Accepted by UK's General Medical Council (GMC), doctors awarded a primary medical qualification from AUA will be able to apply to sit the PLAB test and for GMC registration, without having their qualifications individually assessed.
AUA's International Track will follow the university's established and approved Pre-Clinical and Clinical science curriculum in content, outcomes, progression regulations and program length.
"Medical education is one of the areas that has not addressed the challenges of globalization," said Peter Bell, MD, AUA Vice President of Global Medical Education and Executive Dean of Clinical Sciences. "AUA's International Track provides students the opportunity to become physicians who are able to overcome the challenges in providing healthcare in the 21st century."
At the university's high-tech Antigua campus, students learn the fundamentals of Pre-Clinical medicine via a highly individualized, interactive curriculum that leverages AUA's Small-Group Active Learning Concept, a teaching modality that breaks students into small groups for a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1 during the first academic period and up to 20:1 for the remaining Pre-Clinical periods. This concept is supplemented by subject matter lectures. As a result, students and faculty form academic relationships that are more conducive to learning and retention of knowledge than they would be in larger, lecture-based formats. In addition, this format is more beneficial to forming personal relationships with both faculty and fellow students.

After completing the Pre-Clinical curriculum, students continue their clinical education with AUA in its affiliated teaching hospital sites in the United Kingdom. These sites include Lakeside Healthcare Group, Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwick.
Key accreditations, approvals, and recognitions held by AUA—aside from UK's General Medical Council—include CAAM-HP, the Medical Council of India, the New York State Education Department (NYSED), the Medical Board of California, and the Florida Department of Education's Commission for Independent Education. In addition, AUA is approved by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in federal student aid programs.
AUA offers a wide variety of scholarships and grants for entering students, including the United Kingdom Scholarship ($36,000), the United Kingdom Grant ($25,000), and other scholarships up to $80,000.
Students who apply to AUA now would be eligible to start medical school at AUA as early as August 2020.
Interested students can also elect to complete Clinical training in the United States, with the opportunity to sit for US medical licensure exams, obtain residency, and practice in the United States.
"At AUA, we recognize that we're facing a worldwide shortage of physicians," said Neal S. Simon, President of AUA. "We've already had great success in educating and supplying talented doctors to the United States workforce. Now, with the International Track, our goal is to translate that very success to the United Kingdom physician workforce."
