~ California Gov. Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom issued a statement Oct. 28 on the death of labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, saying the state would lower flags to half-staff in her honor.
Huerta, a member of the California Hall of Fame, began her career as a teacher working with farmworkers' children, the statement said. She later became a leader in the National Farm Workers Association and the United Farm Workers, advocating for workers' rights, gender equity and civil rights.

The governor and first partner credited Huerta with helping shape California through protests and marches, including the Delano grape boycott. They also cited her declaration, "Sí, se puede," and said her legacy would continue through people who follow in her footsteps.
"Dolores represented the best of us," the statement said, describing Huerta as a friend and an inspiration.
