~ Sacramento, CA - The nation mourns the loss of legendary singer-songwriter, actress, and philanthropist Dolly Parton. Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom released a statement today expressing their condolences and honoring Parton's legacy.
"Dolly was larger than life," the statement read. "She was a phenomenal talent and a prolific singer-songwriter, writing and performing songs that have become synonymous with American culture." Parton's impact on the music industry is undeniable, as she holds the title of best-selling female country music artist of all time.
But it wasn't just her music that made her stand out. Parton never forgot her roots and used her upbringing and community as inspiration for her music and philanthropy. "The only thing bigger than her hair was her heart," the statement continued. "She challenged double standards women often face and supported communities of color."
Parton was also a vocal ally to the LGBTQ+ community, using her platform to fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS through her Dollywood Foundation. She also shared her love for reading with millions of children around the world through her literacy program, including tens of thousands in California.

"The world will be less sparkly without Dolly," Governor Newsom said, "but the joy she brought and the stories she shared will shine for generations."
In other news, California continues to lead in job creation and raising wages. Through July 2026, one in six new jobs in the nation were created in California. This demonstrates strong productivity gains and higher wages for workers in the state.
Additionally, Governor Newsom announced that California has become the first state to offer same-day and ongoing opioid treatment support through CA Bridge Connect. This free statewide call- and text-based service provides immediate help to those seeking treatment for opioid use.
Governor Newsom also signed several bills into law on August 24th, including AB 1778, which addresses controlled substances, and AB 2056, which focuses on teacher exchanges.
The passing of Dolly Parton is a loss for the nation, but her legacy will continue to shine through her music and philanthropy. California remains a leader in job creation and addressing important issues such as opioid addiction. Governor Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom continue to work towards a better future for all Californians.
