~ SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom has made several appointments today, July 7, 2025, to key positions within the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.

Thanne Berg, a resident of Albany, has been appointed as the Deputy Director of the Site Mitigation and Restoration Program. Berg has been serving as the Acting Deputy Director since 2024 and brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She previously worked as an Attorney for the Hazardous Waste Program at the United States Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 and was a Special Advisor to the Center Associate Director for the National Aeronautics Space Administration Ames Research Center. Berg also served as a Senior Program Advisor at the United States Environmental Protection Agency Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance and was an Associate Director for the Water and Pesticides Branch at the United States Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 Enforcement Division. She holds a Juris Doctor degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from the University of Alabama. This appointment does not require Senate confirmation and Berg will receive a compensation of $203,004. She is affiliated with the Democratic party.

Albert Lundeen, from Sacramento, has been appointed as the Deputy Director of the Office of Communications at the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Lundeen brings with him years of experience in communications and public affairs. He most recently served as an Assistant Secretary in the Office of Public and Employee Communications at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Prior to that, he was Deputy Executive Director for Strategic Planning and Media at the California Energy Commission and also worked as a Partner at LundeenMacdonald. Lundeen holds a Juris Doctor degree from University of Pacific McGeorge School of Law, a Master of Arts degree in English from California State University Sacramento, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies (Broadcast Journalism) from California State University Chico. This appointment does not require Senate confirmation and Lundeen will receive a compensation of $167,052. He is also affiliated with the Democratic party.
