~ Sacramento, California - On September 11, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences for the passing of California State Prison - Corcoran Correctional Officer Jonathan Townsend. Officer Townsend, who had served in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for 23 years, passed away while on duty due to a medical emergency.
In a statement released by the Governor's office, Newsom praised Officer Townsend for his professionalism and dedication to protecting the people of California. He also extended his sympathies to Officer Townsend's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
Officer Townsend, 54 years old at the time of his passing, had joined the department in 2002 after graduating from the academy. He initially served at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad before transferring to COR in 2003. He is survived by his wife and three children.

To honor Officer Townsend's memory and service, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will continue to be flown at half-staff.
