~ SACRAMENTO - On December 7, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation declaring the day as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. This marks the 84th anniversary of the unprovoked attack by Imperial Japan on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor.
The proclamation, which can be found below, pays tribute to the more than 2,400 American service members and civilians who lost their lives in the attack. It also honors all those who have served and continue to serve our country in battlefields around the world.
Governor Newsom stated that on this day, we remember the immense sacrifices made by our service members and reflect on their bravery and heroism. He urged Californians to pay solemn tribute to these American heroes who gave their lives to defend our freedoms.
The Governor's proclamation comes as part of a series of recent news updates from California. Just two days prior, Governor Newsom expressed his disappointment with the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for voting to end universal newborn hepatitis B vaccinations. He also celebrated a record year for CHP cadets and met with congressional leaders to push for long-delayed LA wildfire aid.

As we near the end of 2025, Governor Newsom commemorates the last batch of 137 new officers joining the California Highway Patrol, bringing this year's total of trained and graduated cadets to 780. He also spent time in bipartisan meetings on Capitol Hill, urging Congress to break the unprecedented federal delay on LA wildfire recovery funds.
The text of Governor Newsom's proclamation can be found below:
PROCLAMATION
On this day 84 years ago, Imperial Japan launched an unprovoked attack on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, killing more than 2,400 American service members and civilians and destroying much of our nation's Pacific Fleet. This attack led President Roosevelt to call on Congress to declare an act of war the next day, stating December 7, 1941 would be a "date which will live in infamy."
As we reflect on the painful losses of that fateful day, we remember those who defended Pearl Harbor – and all the courageous individuals who signed up to serve our country in battlefields across the globe. Each year, we are reminded of these immense sacrifices and all that we owe our service members who fight to defend the freedoms we cherish.
