~ SACRAMENTO - In response to an ongoing chemical incident at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove, Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Orange County. The hazardous materials incident has resulted in the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents from the surrounding area.
The proclamation issued by Governor Newsom directs the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and all state government agencies to support Orange County and impacted local jurisdictions in addressing the emergency. This includes unlocking additional emergency response resources and authorities, such as making state-owned properties and fairgrounds available as shelter for evacuated residents.
The safety of Orange County residents is the top priority for Governor Newsom, who stated, "We are mobilizing every state resource available to support local responders and make sure the community has what they need to stay safe."
Director of Cal OES Caroline Thomas Jacobs also emphasized the agency's commitment to a unified response, saying, "Our role is to coordinate resources, share critical information, and ensure local responders have all the necessary resources to safely respond to this dynamic situation."
