~ In a recent press release, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has welcomed 119 new officers to its ranks. This marks the largest graduating class in over two years and is a significant step towards meeting the state's CHP 1000 recruitment campaign.

During a graduation ceremony at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento, these new officers were sworn in by CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. The ceremony marked the end of an intensive 26-week training for the new recruits.

Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude to these officers for their commitment to protecting Californians and their communities. He also encouraged them to take pride in representing the best of California as public servants.

The new officers will now report to one of the 102 CHP Area offices throughout the state to begin their service. This class is a result of various recruitment efforts and hiring investments made by the CHP, including a new recruitment web series called "Cadets."

Since the launch of the CHP 1000 recruitment campaign and other recruitment efforts, there has been an increase in cadet numbers this year. In fact, with today's class, a total of 528 officers have been added to CHP's ranks in 2024, surpassing last year's total number of officers sworn in. Since 2023, over 900 cadets have been sworn in as CHP officers.

The training at the CHP Academy focuses on nobility in policing, leadership, professionalism and ethics, and cultural diversity. Cadets also receive instruction on mental illness response and crisis intervention techniques.

For those interested in joining the ranks of CHP, there is still an opportunity to be one of the 1,000 new officers through upcoming hiring seminars. The department has seen a surge of interest since launching its multi-year recruitment campaign in June 2022. In just six months this year, they received over 11,700 cadet applications, a 58% increase from the same period in 2022. To accommodate this interest, the CHP has been holding three Academy classes simultaneously for the first time in its history. The next graduation is scheduled for November 15, 2024.

As part of California's Real Public Safety Plan, the Governor announced the largest-ever investment to combat organized retail crime in state history and an annual 310% increase in proactive operations targeting organized retail crime.

In addition to this news, Governor Newsom also shared that California's earthquake Early Warning System successfully notified millions of Californians through emergency alerts ahead of a recent Southern California quake. He also announced that he has signed several bills into law, including AB 1960 by Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas to strengthen felony sentences for large-scale theft offenses.

The ceremony was recorded and is available for viewing. With these new officers joining the ranks of CHP, California continues to make progress towards ensuring public safety and protecting its communities.
