California invests nearly $150 million to improve access to health care for Californians

~ SACRAMENTO - In a move to improve access to health care for all Californians, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that the state will be investing nearly $150 million in specialized, community-based services. This investment is part of California's efforts to transform its health care system into one that is more effective, affordable, and accessible.

The $145.5 million in awards will be distributed to organizations across the state, supporting programs such as in-person care coordination, housing support, and other vital resources. These funds are part of the Providing Access and Transforming Health (PATH) Capacity and Infrastructure, Transition, Expansion, and Development (CITED) initiative. The goal of this initiative is to help local providers expand their ability to deliver whole-person, community-based care.

Governor Newsom stated that "care comes in many forms to meet many needs - and California is committed to providing that care." He emphasized the importance of these awards in improving access to effective health care and supporting tailored programs that meet the unique needs of each community.

The PATH CITED initiative was launched in 2022 and has already awarded over $1.66 billion to more than 2,200 community providers. These investments have led to a 120 percent increase in access for children and youth and over a million services delivered to those who need them. All awardees are dedicated to serving historically underserved populations.

According to DHCS Director Michelle Baass, these investments not only benefit Californians but also result in long-term savings for the state's Medi-Cal program by reducing avoidable emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and long-term care use.

This latest announcement adds on to recent news from Governor Newsom about underutilized state property being transformed into affordable homes in Riverside and nearly $100 million being awarded through California Competes Tax Credits for job creation.

As strong storms continue to impact the state, Governor Newsom has also pre-deployed additional resources and personnel to Southern California to protect communities from potential impacts, particularly in areas affected by recent wildfires.
