~ Sacramento, California - In response to the devastating Canyon Fire in Southern California, Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Friday that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This grant will provide vital resources to help suppress the fire and support local and state response efforts.

The fast-moving Canyon Fire ignited on August 7, 2025 near Lake Piru in Ventura County and quickly spread into Los Angeles County. So far, over 4,850 acres have been burned and several communities are at risk. The fire has forced the evacuation of more than 4,300 residents and an additional 12,000 are under evacuation warnings.

Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude to the brave men and women who are fighting not only the Canyon Fire but also other wildfires throughout the state. He stated that this assistance from FEMA will help protect California communities.

The FMAG is provided through FEMA on a cost-share basis and will cover 75 percent of eligible fire suppression costs for local, state, and tribal agencies responding to the fire. This will help alleviate some of the financial burden on these agencies as they work tirelessly to contain the fire.
