Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach has launched a newly redesigned Jobs webpage, offering a modern, engaging and more streamlined approach to the application process for potential job seekers interested in joining the City of Long Beach. Through a more intuitive, mobile-friendly and visually appealing user experience, the new longbeach.gov/jobs webpage provides a clearer pathway to explore opportunities, navigate the City's recruitment process, and learn more about the City's mission, values and local and inclusive hiring preferences.

"Our City is home to a wide variety of unique career opportunities, and this redesigned webpage makes it easier than ever for people to see themselves as part of Long Beach's future," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "Whether you're a student seeking an internship, a veteran continuing your service or a professional looking for your next chapter, this webpage makes every pathway easier to access. By streamlining the application process and showcasing our values, we're ensuring Long Beach remains a place where talented people can grow meaningful careers and make a difference in our community."

With the recent merger of the Civil Service Department with the Human Resources (HR) Department following the voter approved passing of charter amendment Measure JB in November 2024, this improved webpage consolidates information previously found on both department's webpages into one unified point of access for job information managed by the new singular and restructured HR Department.

The webpage is organized into four sections, which can be found on the navigation panel at the top of the page:
  • Home – The home page provides a broad overview of the new Jobs webpage's offerings, including the City's more than 500 diverse job opportunities and range of career paths across 23 departments and offices, and showcases the City's mission and opportunities with a dynamic video titled Grow Your Career with the City of Long Beach.
  • Find a Job – This section is a one-stop shop for all opportunities available in the City—this includes current openings, promotional opportunities, internships, volunteer roles and Port of Long Beach positions—and allows applicants to easily explore career options that align with their skills, passions and interests.
  • How to Apply – This section is where job seekers can find information on the City recruitment process, including a step-by-step timeline from application submission through onboarding, helping applicants understand what to expect and how their application will be reviewed. This section also includes a comprehensive list of FAQs that explains key processes, rules and distinctions between classified and unclassified service. Also featured is the most up-to-date Civil Service Rules and Regulations determined by the recently established independent Civil Service Employee Rights and Appeals Commission as part of Measure JB.
  • Working for the City – This section highlights the City's mission and commitment to public service, emphasizing the many benefits of joining the City, building a meaningful career and making a real impact on the community. This section also features resources for the City's veteran workforce and veterans seeking employment opportunities, as well as information on the City's centralizing hiring system and showcases City values of diversity, equity and inclusion, fair chance employment and the City's designation as a Certified Age-Friendly Employer.

Coming soon, the Working for the City section will also include information on the City's local and inclusive hiring preferences. The City understands that a workforce with deep roots in the community will inherently bring a higher level of care, understanding and dedication to serving the community's needs. Hiring preference is given to Long Beach residents, graduates of local institutions, internal candidates, those who completed internships and apprenticeships with the City, veterans, disabled veterans, spouses of disabled veterans and un-remarried spouses of deceased veterans. This hiring approach is not just about filling positions, but also about fostering a culture of opportunity, inclusivity and mutual investment in the community's future. This work is in development and will be announced once it is completed.

"Our updated Jobs webpage represents a major step forward in how we connect with our current workforce and our future employees," said City Manager Tom Modica. "This newly redesigned Jobs webpage not only highlights the wide range of opportunities across our 23 departments and offices, but also provides clear guidance on how to apply, our local hiring preferences, what to expect and the many benefits of working with the City. It reflects our commitment to transparency, accessibility and supporting applicants every step of the way, while underscoring our efforts in modernizing our processes and building a strong, diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the community we serve."

The City employs over 6,100 full- and part-time staff personnel in 23 departments and offices. The HR Department has made significant strides in modernizing and centralizing its processes by streamlining workflows and enhancing service delivery across the organization. These reform efforts have transformed how the Department supports the City's workforce by creating a more efficient and effective operational framework. The HR Department manages all employee recruitment and hiring processes, implements local preferences in the classified service and works to achieve a goal of hiring most positions within 90 business days.

"Our new Jobs webpage is more than just a redesign—it's part of our continued commitment to building a modern and accessible hiring system that is welcoming for all," said Director of Human Resources Bryce M. Tyler. "By consolidating information into one central hub, streamlining processes and highlighting our core values as a City, we are making it easier for job seekers to more quickly connect with our many opportunities, and in turn attracting and retaining a talented workforce that reflects our deeply diverse community."
