~ A federal appeals court has ruled against the Trump administration in a dispute over federal involvement in California's election process, according to a statement released by Gov. Gavin Newsom's office on Oct. 30.

The office said the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the administration's latest effort, marking its third legal setback in the matter that week. The dispute arose while voting was underway and days before Election Day, the statement said.

Newsom said California would continue to challenge what he described as unlawful federal interference and work to ensure a free and fair election. The governor's statement did not detail the appeals court's reasoning.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the rulings showed the administration had no authority to interfere in the state's elections. He said state law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections and includes safeguards against it. Bonta also characterized the administration's claims of widespread fraud as baseless and said they risk undermining confidence in elections and disenfranchising eligible voters.

The statement said the Ninth Circuit had rejected the Justice Department's request for a preliminary injunction on Monday, and a district court denied another administration request on Wednesday. It did not specify the relief sought in the latest appeal.
