LOS ANGELES - Californer -- The Way We Do It, a trailblazing sketch comedy show originally aired on BET, is set for a potential revival, spearheaded by its creator and former BET executive producer, André Barnwell. Inspired by hit shows like "Saturday Night Live" and "In Living Color", producer André Barnwell originally conceptualized "The Way We Do It" as a groundbreaking venture to bring sketch comedy to basic cable, a format traditionally dominated by broadcast and premium networks.
André leveraged his experience as an executive producer of BET's highly successful stand-up comedy show "Comic View", which featured legendary hosts like DL Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, Rickey Smiley, Bruce Bruce, and Arnez J, along with numerous rising stars. At its peak, "Comic View" reached more Black households than any other cable program, airing in 61 million homes. Building on this success, André Barnwell envisioned a sketch comedy platform that highlighted the storytelling and character-driven humor of seasoned stand-up comedians.

"The format of 'The Way We Do It' was different by design," said producer André Barnwell. "It wasn't about comedy writers—it was centered around the unique talents of stand-up comedians who perfected their craft on the road. They brought authenticity, energy, and originality to the screen, much like the stand-up roots that once drew me to 'Saturday Night Live' during Eddie Murphy's era."
The show aired 36 episodes, over two seasons, and left a lasting impression on audiences. After a decade, he successfully claimed the trademark: "The Way We Do It".
"As a Howard University alum and the only sketch comedy creator who owns their trademark, I now have the flexibility to reimagine the show for today's audience," André shared. "This opens the door for exciting opportunities to showcase a new generation of stand-up talent and take the format to the next level."
As a successful television producer, André Barnwell is exploring partnerships and platforms to bring the show back to life and ensure it remains a space for stand-up comedians to shine while introducing a fresh approach to sketch comedy.
