~ Sacramento, California - On September 19, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed the day as "California POW/MIA Recognition Day" in honor of the service and sacrifice of those who never returned home from war.
In a solemn proclamation, Governor Newsom acknowledged the more than 80,000 American service personnel who remain missing from World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars, Gulf wars, and the war in Afghanistan. He also recognized those who were taken as prisoners of war and never returned, as well as those who are still missing in action.
The Governor commended the efforts of the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency for their dedication and diligence in seeking answers for these missing service members. Since 2019, the agency has identified and accounted for 1,052 Americans, including 139 in 2025 alone.
Governor Newsom also highlighted the importance of honoring these brave souls by keeping their memory alive and continuing to search for answers for their loved ones. He acknowledged the families of missing Vietnam War service members for their activism in establishing POW/MIA Recognition Day in 1979.

To show solidarity with these efforts, Governor Newsom called upon Californians to display the POW/MIA flag at government buildings, businesses, and homes throughout the state. He reaffirmed the enduring promise that these service members are not forgotten.
The proclamation was signed on September 14th with Governor Newsom's signature and the Great Seal of California affixed. It was attested by Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber.
In other news, Governor Newsom recently signed a historic package of bipartisan legislation aimed at saving billions on electric bills while also stabilizing gas markets and cutting pollution. The new laws will provide up to $60 billion in electricity bill refunds for California families.
Additionally, on September 18th, Governor Newsom announced his appointment of 15 Superior Court Judges across various counties in California. He will also be signing major legislation tomorrow that promises to lower electricity costs, stabilize the petroleum market, and address climate and energy affordability.
As Governor Newsom continues to make strides in improving the lives of Californians, he remains committed to honoring the sacrifices made by those who serve our country and ensuring that they are never forgotten.
