SAYULITA, Mexico - Californer -- Mexico's Pacific coast is set to gain even greater recognition within the global surfing community as Nayarit advances a series of initiatives designed to strengthen surf tourism, coastal development, and international collaboration.
As part of a national strategy to promote sports and coastal tourism, Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, and Nayarit Secretary of Tourism, Juan Enrique Suárez del Real Tostado, recently met with representatives of the state's surfing associations to discuss infrastructure improvements, destination promotion, and sustainable development initiatives aimed at supporting the continued growth of surfing across the region.
The meeting focused on surf tourism as a driver of economic development, environmental stewardship, and community well-being, while exploring opportunities to enhance visitor experiences and strengthen Nayarit's reputation among surfers worldwide.
A major milestone highlighted during the discussions was the recent appointment of Bahía de Banderas as Vice President of the World Surf Cities Network (WSCN), a distinction awarded unanimously by member destinations. The recognition places Nayarit in a leadership role within an international network of surfing destinations committed to sustainable tourism, coastal preservation, and surf culture.

Through this new role, Bahía de Banderas, part of Riviera Nayarit, will collaborate with renowned surf destinations including Ericeira, Nazaré, and Viana do Castelo in Portugal; San Sebastián and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain; Garabito in Costa Rica; Arica in Chile; and Miraflores in Peru, further elevating Nayarit's international profile.
The announcement follows additional national initiatives unveiled by Mexico's Secretary of Tourism during a federal tourism briefing on June 22, including the creation of a new national surf tourism route that will connect some of Mexico's most iconic surf destinations and promote the country as a premier international surfing destination.
Among the most significant developments is the announcement that Sayulita will officially become Mexico's first Surf City, receiving the designation on November 2, 2026, during the destination's Day of the Dead celebrations.
The designation recognizes Sayulita's long-standing role as one of Mexico's most beloved surf towns and a gateway to the country's vibrant surf culture. Known for its consistent waves, laid-back atmosphere, surf schools, and international community, Sayulita has become a favorite destination for beginners and experienced surfers alike, attracting visitors from across North America and around the world.
