~ California Celebrates 175 Years of Statehood with Festivities Across the Golden State

Sacramento - Yesterday, California kicked off its 175th anniversary of statehood with a day full of celebrations honoring the history, people, and spirit of innovation that make up the Golden State. The festivities began with First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom cutting a cake at the California State Library, followed by a block party hosted by California State Parks. The evening ended with a spectacular laser show stretching from the State Capitol to the Tower Bridge.

The day's events were centered around highlighting California's rich history and strong sense of community. At the California State Library, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom joined State Librarian Greg Lucas for a celebratory cake cutting to commemorate this milestone anniversary. With over 1,000 libraries across the state, this moment served as a reminder of California's enduring commitment to community, learning, and connection.

The block party held from 6 to 9 p.m. was open to the public and featured music, food trucks, birthday cake, and California-grown treats. Guests also had the opportunity to participate in hands-on history activities led by State Parks staff. Volunteers dressed in period attire shared stories about Admission Day and the Capitol's legacy, allowing attendees to step back in time.

The highlight of the evening was a breathtaking laser show designed by Tim Anderson of Nu-Salt Laser International and Ben Davis of Illuminate. As a nod to California's entry as the 31st state in the Union and its role in inventing lasers, thirty-one Laser Space Cannons lit up the night sky.

For those who missed out on last night's festivities or want to relive them again, there is still plenty more celebrating to come throughout the year. Visit celebrate.ca.gov for information on upcoming events in your area and be sure to share your experiences on social media using #CA175.

In addition to these celebrations, California is also making strides in transportation and environmental efforts. Governor Gavin Newsom announced continued state financial support for Bay Area transit and offered short-term financial assistance to support Bay Area transit agencies with hundreds of millions of dollars. This comes after the Trump administration and Republican Congress's failure to extend the federal Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) decal program, which means California drivers with these decals will lose carpool lane access starting September 30.

Furthermore, as some of the state's largest wildfires of 2025 continue to spread on neglected federal lands, Governor Newsom announced more than 100 wildfire prevention projects to help fill the void left by the federal government. These efforts are crucial in protecting California's natural resources and communities.

As California celebrates its 175th year of statehood, it is clear that the Golden State remains committed to progress, innovation, and community. With a rich history and a bright future ahead, there is no doubt that California will continue to lead the way in shaping our nation.
