Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has been selected as an LA28 Venue City and will host 11 sporting events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, according to an announcement made today by the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28). This news follows the approval of LA28's Olympic Venue Plan by the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board on April 9, 2025. The plan includes relocations and additions to the existing plan.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his excitement and honor at Long Beach being chosen as a premier waterfront venue for the 2028 Games. He stated, "We are thrilled and honored to have Beach Volleyball join the list of acclaimed sporting events to be held on our iconic coastline, from Sailing to Water Polo." He also highlighted the opportunity for Long Beach to showcase its culture, diversity, and community spirit to the world. Mayor Richardson emphasized that hosting these events presents a generational economic opportunity for the city.
Beach Volleyball will be showcased at Alamitos Beach in Long Beach, bringing it closer to other sports such as Coastal Rowing, which will make its first Olympic appearance along the city's waterfront in 2028. Additionally, Sport Climbing will take place in the Convention Center Lot with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. Target Shooting will also be held at the Convention Center in a temporary indoor range. This marks the first time this precision sport will be within walking distance of other Olympic disciplines.

With these new additions, Long Beach is now confirmed to host a total of 11 sporting events across six venues for the 2028 Olympic Games. These four new events join previously announced sports such as Handball at Long Beach Arena, Canoe-Sprint and Rowing competitions at Marine Stadium, Sailing along Belmont Shore's waters, Marathon Swimming along the waterfront, and Artistic Swimming and Water Polo in temporary aquatics centers at the Convention Center Lot. However, Triathlon competitions, which were initially planned for Long Beach, have been relocated to a different city by LA28.
Long Beach's involvement in the 2028 Olympic Games was first proposed as part of the City of Los Angeles' bid to host the 2024 Games. The addition of these new events will not only enhance the overall experience for athletes and spectators but also keep expenses and impact lower while bringing in more visitors, economic activity, and revenue to Long Beach.
The City's participation in the 2028 Olympic Games will not only raise its international profile as a world-renowned destination for business, tourism, and special events but also generate significant economic activity and improve the livability of Long Beach for residents and visitors for years to come.
