~ California has reached a major milestone in earthquake preparedness as the MyShake app surpasses 4 million downloads. This achievement, announced by Governor Gavin Newsom during Earthquake Preparedness Month, is a significant step in expanding access to California's life-saving earthquake technology and building resilience across the state.
Under Governor Newsom's leadership, California's Earthquake Early Warning system uses ground motion sensors to notify residents in advance of shaking. With over 60% of the 1,046 sensors installed since the program launched in 2019, the system has become more accurate and able to deliver alerts faster.
Last week, the MyShake app sent out 693,044 alerts for a 5.2 magnitude earthquake near Julian in San Diego County. This was a subset of the total 7.5 million alerts sent out for that event, with some users receiving up to 35 seconds notice before shaking occurred.
Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of this milestone and urged Californians to spread the word about downloading the MyShake app. "MyShake provides Californians with life-saving seconds before earthquakes strike," he stated. "This is a proud moment for California and a reminder that preparedness is an ongoing effort."

The MyShake app is free, easy to use, and available in six languages: English, Spanish, Chinese (Traditional), Tagalog, Korean, and Vietnamese. It can be downloaded on iOS, Android, and Chromebooks and includes earthquake and tsunami preparedness information not found on other alerting platforms.
In addition to using early warning technology through smartphones, Californians are also encouraged to pair it with the Cal OES Earthquake Readiness Guide. This comprehensive guide offers clear safety tips and explains essential preparedness steps before, during, and after an earthquake.
To further promote earthquake preparedness efforts, Governor Newsom also announced a partnership between California and federal agencies to repopulate the North Yuba River with native fish. This project aims to protect the state's waterways and ecosystems.
In another effort to protect California's communities, the state has added a second C-130 Hercules airtanker to its aerial firefighting fleet ahead of peak fire season. This addition adds to the state's arsenal in fighting catastrophic wildfires.
As Californians continue to take steps towards earthquake preparedness, it is crucial to stay informed and download the MyShake app for early warning alerts. To learn more about earthquake preparedness and download the app, visit www.earthquake.ca.gov.
