Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As the month of May approaches, the City of Long Beach is gearing up for its annual celebration of Bike Month. This nationwide initiative aims to promote the benefits of cycling and encourage sustainable transportation, healthy lifestyles, and community connection. Residents and community members are invited to participate in a variety of bike-related activities throughout the month.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his excitement for Bike Month, stating that it is a time to highlight the many benefits of cycling and the city's commitment to sustainable transportation. He also emphasized Long Beach's reputation as a leader in creating bike-friendly infrastructure and their dedication to expanding access and safety for all cyclists. "From community bike rides to educational events, this month is an opportunity for residents of all ages to embrace cycling as a fun, healthy, and eco-friendly way to explore our city," Mayor Richardson said.

The month-long celebration will feature a diverse lineup of events suitable for both experienced cyclists and beginners. One highly anticipated event is Beach Streets in West Long Beach on Saturday, May 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event encourages an active lifestyle by opening up streets for walking, biking, and exploring the Westside Promise Initiative. The initiative is a 10-year community investment plan that addresses current and historic challenges facing West Long Beach through partnerships with existing city efforts.
National Bike to Work Week will take place from May 12-18 at various locations throughout Long Beach. Residents can visit longbeach.gov/bikemonth for information on bike routes, tune-ups, bike buses, and events hosted by Car-Lite Long Beach and Bike Long Beach.
On Sunday, May 18 at 11 a.m., Pixie Toys will host Kidical Mass in celebration of its 13th anniversary. This neighborhood bike ride will cover a distance of 4.5 miles around Bixby Knolls while supporting small local businesses along the way.

Volunteers are encouraged to join Car-Lite's bike lane clean-up on Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at the corner of 2nd Street and East Marina Drive. The event aims to keep bike lanes safe and free of trash and debris, and volunteers are advised to bring gloves, sun protection, and large plastic bags.
Bike Long Beach will host Bikes and Coffee: Bikes on Broadway on Sunday, May 25 at 10 a.m. The event will start at Promenade Square and take participants down the entire length of the Broadway corridor using its protected bike lanes. A stop at a local coffee shop is also included in the ride.
The month will end with the Uptown Community Bike Ride on Saturday, May 31 at 10:30 a.m. Hosted by the City's Department of Health and Human Services, this low-stress community bike ride will explore the newly renovated Artesia Great Boulevard project and its new bike lanes.
