Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach residents are being encouraged to take part in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, at 10:15 a.m., the city's Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications said.

The self-led drill asks participants to practise three steps: drop to their hands and knees, cover their head and neck and, if possible, shelter under a sturdy table or desk, then hold on until the shaking stops. Residents can register online to participate.

The annual drill began in Southern California in 2008 as the Great California ShakeOut. The city said more than 60 million people worldwide took part last year.

The department recommends that older adults and people with disabilities or limited mobility review earthquake safety guidance before an emergency. Resources for organizing participation at home, school or work are available at EarthquakeCountry.org.

In the hours before the drill, city staff will test the Alert Long Beach emergency messaging system by sending notifications to non-public safety city employees. The test is intended to highlight their role as Disaster Service Workers, who assist residents during disasters, the city said. Employees may receive a test message by phone, text or email.

The city also urged residents to use the drill as a reminder to prepare for other emergencies. Its recommendations include signing up for Alert Long Beach, learning basic emergency medical procedures and CPR, and keeping a go-bag in an accessible location. The city advises that bags contain essentials for household members, including pets, for up to five days.

Residents can find emergency information at longbeach.gov/emergency and follow the city's social media accounts, the city said. It also recommends reviewing its hazard mitigation resources and using the My Hazards tool to identify risks affecting a home or workplace.

The city said residents can receive earthquake early-warning notifications through the MyShake app for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher in areas expected to experience light shaking or stronger. Depending on a person's distance from the epicenter, a warning may provide seconds to take precautions before stronger shaking begins.
