Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Acting City Health Officer, Dr. Cliff Okada, has taken swift action to protect the public from potential health hazards by ordering the temporary closure of all open coastal swimming areas in Long Beach. This decision comes after a report from the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) revealed that over 18,000 gallons of sewage were discharged into the San Gabriel River on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

The sewage spill occurred in the City of Industry due to railway installation work that damaged a pipe, causing the sewage to flow towards ocean waters. In accordance with state law and out of an abundance of caution, Dr. Okada has ordered the closure and posting of beaches until water quality meets state requirements.

The City of Long Beach Health Department's Recreational Water Quality Environmental Health Specialists are closely monitoring water quality in coastal beaches. They will continue to do so until sampling results comply with state water quality standards.

With over six miles of public beach in Long Beach, it is crucial to ensure that the water is safe for recreational use. To protect public health and safety, weekly water samples are routinely collected and tested for bacterial levels. Community members are urged to pay close attention to warning signs posted at the beach and avoid any contact with the water while closures are in effect.
