LOS ANGELES - Californer -- Independent recording artist Matell is marking a milestone week: his debut album "Skull: Shadows," nine classic songs reimagined in a new way, plus his original "Honest Man." The album debuted at No.1 on Amazon Music's R&B/Soul chart, and his "Shadow Dancing (Sam Leuis Remix)" has landed at #36 on Apple Music's R&B/Soul Daily chart in Norway.
"No tour. No major label. No industry machine," says Matell. "Just the music, and the people who found it. Everything you're reading happened because of the fans — and I don't take a second of it for granted."
"Skull: Shadows" reimagines timeless classics by Crystal Gayle, Andy Gibb, Bobby Womack, Deniece Williams, Ashford & Simpson, Bob Dylan, Teddy Pendergrass, Barbra Streisand, Sylvester, and the album's only original track, "Honest Man," a collaboration with the late Aaron Carter.
The timing is no accident. Shadow Dancing was first released by Andy Gibb and spent seven weeks at number one that summer, making this month the 48th anniversary of the original single. Matell's disco soul take honors that legacy while giving the song a new life on today's dance floor, a connection that has already resonated with listeners in Norway and beyond.

The momentum is international. This week, Matell submitted "Shadow Dancing (Sam Leuis Remix)" to DR, Denmark's national radio, for consideration on its P4 channel. The remix is also scheduled for Formula Indie (60 programmations across its global network) and European Indie Music's weekly TV magazine show.
Radio is only part of the story. Formula Indie is a two-hour daily program carried by more than 80 stations across Europe, the Americas, Asia and beyond, and every artist featured on the show earns a guaranteed spot on the Euro Indie Music Chart and its televised countdown. The remix will also appear on the Euro Indie Music Weekly Magazine television show, broadcast across Italy, the United States, Brazil, Chile, Puerto Rico, etc.
The Sam Leuis Remix rebuilds the original for today's dance floor, keeping the song's unmistakable melody while giving it a modern disco soul pulse. It is the version now carrying Matell's name into new territory, from Scandinavian streaming charts to radio programmers across two continents.
What to expect: Matell will make a big announcement in the coming weeks.
