Paul Tocatlian Transforms Melbourne's Streets into a Canvas for Creativity
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Californer -- The Melbourne Portraits Project: A Photographic Ode, a newly released photo book by photographer Paul Tocatlian, debuts today. This 192-page curated collection captures the essence of Melbourne's creative community, transforming quiet streets, hidden corners, and graffiti-lined alleyways into an unconventional studio during periods between lockdowns.
Organized into 12 chapters, The Melbourne Portraits Project presents a visual journey through Melbourne's diverse creative scenes. Each chapter showcases a unique aesthetic, from shadowed alleys to vibrant graffiti murals, capturing the energy of Melbourne's artistic spirit. The book opens with a foreword by writer Jay Ventress, who reflects on Tocatlian's work: "For Paul, his camera was his cure—a lifeline. Watching him shoot, his eyes burned with purpose. He wanted his photos to make each person feel less like an extra and more like a star."

Accompanying the book, Tocatlian has launched a companion website offering readers an in-depth look at the creative process behind each chapter. Updated weekly, the site provides exclusive content, including behind-the-scenes stories, additional photos, and interviews with those who helped bring the project to life. "The Companion Website is a space for readers to connect with other creatives and explore the inspiration behind each chapter," says Tocatlian. "This project goes beyond the book—it's about building community."
To celebrate the release, Tocatlian will return to Melbourne later this month. "This city has been both my inspiration and my studio. Celebrating the book in Melbourne feels like coming full circle," he says.
The Melbourne Portraits Project: A Photographic Ode is now available worldwide, inviting readers to experience Melbourne's creative pulse through a powerful collection of portraits. "This book is made for creatives," says Tocatlian, "for those who find beauty in everyday moments, seek depth in unexpected places, and live by the idea to 'be bolder, dream bigger.' I hope it inspires others to see the world in a new way."
