LOS ANGELES - Californer -- "The fact is you don't have free trade. We think of it as free trade, but you right now don't have free trade. A lot of people are tired of watching the other countries ripping off the United States. This is a great country."
President Donald Trump voiced his determination to do battle with foreign countries on tariffs on the campaign trail in 2024. He had repeatedly accused them of "ripping off" the U.S. Once he got in the White House in January 2024, he then slapped punishing tariffs on China, Canada, and México. He quickly backed away from the massive hikes on Canada and Mexico. But not on China.
Trump uttered this hard-nosed quip on tariffs on the Larry King Show in 1987. The Trump blast was lifted from a larger documentary on Trump and tariffs titled Trump's Trade Wars. Trump's trade ire then was aimed not at China but at Japan. Four decades later that had changed.

In Power, Control, Ego-The Real Reason for Trump's Tariff Obsession, political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson details and examines the crucial importance of these issues in the tariff debacle. He assesses Trumps' horrible reading of the history of, and the damage done by tariffs and trade wars. He analyzes why Trump cares nothing about the tens of millions of Americans who lose in the tariff battle. That includes millions of rabid MAGA backers.
He presents a condensed, clear sighted picture of why power, control, and ego are the real motive forces that drive Trump's tariff and trade war. Hutchinson warns that has and will continue to have lethal consequences for Trump and the nation.
