LOS ANGELES - Californer -- The Spanish language Latinx podcast "De Pueblo, Católico y Gay," proudly celebrates its second anniversary and Pride Month. Since 2018, "De Pueblo, Católico y Gay" has established itself as a platform for uncomfortable conversations that lead to more understanding and unity.
Based in Los Angeles, the podcast was inspired by the host's own coming out process. According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), family acceptance for Latinx LGBTQ+ youth is a top concern when coming out. The HRC also found that one out of three Latinx LGBTQ+ youth fear for their safety when coming out due to conservative values and religious beliefs they were raised with.
The first trailer for the podcast was launched on May 28, 2018 right before Pride Month, which is celebrated in many countries around the world including the U.S. and Mexico. Since then, more than seventy Latinx members of the LGBTQ community have shared their stories on "De Pueblo, Católico y Gay". The podcast does have a few English language or bilingual interviews but is mostly done in Spanish to make the stories accessible to elders in the Latinx community.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the podcast successfully shifted to all virtual interviews in an effort to continue sharing the stories of Latinx LGBTQ+ community members.
In total, the podcast has generated over 230,000 unique downloads. It is hosted and produced by Eder Díaz, also known as radio-personality and LGBTQ+ activist "Gorritas." Diaz's professional experience includes working for Spanish language television & radio networks from 2007 until 2020.
"De pueblo, Católico y Gay," also inspired a podcast and book by undergraduate students at Cal State Northridge in the Spring of 2019. Titled "Dreamers: Redefinir el Sueño Americano", Díaz was an advisor to this project and has also taught undergraduate classes in the Spanish-language journalism program.
Diaz, who received a B.A. in journalism, is currently working on his master's degree in Mass Communication and was just awarded the 2019-2020 Dean's Recognition Award for Continuing Graduate Student at Cal State Northridge.
