When:
Extended deadline is through June 30, 2022
Who: Any type of business or business owner that meets eligibility requirements can apply for a business tax hardship exemption.
Background: The business tax financial hardship exemption is open to all businesses that meet qualifying criteria, submit an exemption application and are approved for an exemption.

Businesses and business owners are eligible for an exemption if:
  • Their business tax renewal date is between Oct. 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.
    • For 2020, one of the following must apply:
      • The business's gross receipts were $25,520 or less.
      • The business owner's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) was $51,040 or less.
    • For 2021, one of the following must apply:
      • The business's anticipated gross receipts are $25,760 or less.
      • The business owner's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is $51,520 or less.
Businesses may use their anticipated income for 2021 in their exemption application. If you receive an exemption based on anticipated income for 2021, you will need to present your 2021 federal and state tax returns the next time you renew your San José Business Tax, to verify the exemption. Businesses and business owners who have already received a Business Tax Exemption before Oct. 1, 2021 will need to reapply for an exemption.
