The Californer - Long Beach: El Dorado Nature Center to Hold New Year, New Use Recycling Drive

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is teaming up with Retail Marketing Services (RMS), Inc.'s CRV CONNX community recycling program to host a New Year, New Use Recycling Drive on Friday, Jan. 2 at El Dorado Nature Center. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and all proceeds will be donated to Food Finders Inc., a local organization that supports food distribution sites in Long Beach.

Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his excitement for the event, stating, "This is a great opportunity for community members to donate those leftover CRV cans and bottles from their holiday celebrations, and in turn, help people who are facing food insecurity in our city." He encouraged residents to start the new year off right by participating in the recycling drive and supporting a good cause.

Community members are encouraged to gather eligible California Redemption Value (CRV) redemption items such as bottles, cans, boxes, and pouches made of aluminum, glass, plastic, and bi-metals. These items can then be dropped off at the El Dorado Nature Center on Jan. 2. Participants are welcome to bring their donations in garbage bags, cardboard boxes or reusable tote bags.

All items collected during the drive will be recycled at a CalRecycle facility and the funds generated will be donated through the CRV CONNX program to Food Finders Inc. This not only helps support local food distribution sites but also promotes environmental sustainability goals outlined in PRM's Parks Make Long Beach Strategic Plan. The event is funded by a CalRecycle workforce development grant received by RMS, Inc.

Britany Hernandez, CRV Ambassador for RMS Inc., shared her enthusiasm for the event saying, "CRV CONNX transforms recycling into a meaningful way for residents to give back." She added that this partnership with El Dorado Nature Center creates a strong community effort that combines environmental stewardship with local support. Every eligible CRV donation will go towards providing meals to those in need while also keeping Long Beach clean and green.

The El Dorado Nature Center, located at 7550 E. Spring St., is a 105-acre wildlife habitat with two lakes, a stream, and two miles of dirt walking trails. The center also features interactive exhibits in the museum, a gift shop, educational programs, special events, and volunteer opportunities. During the recycling drive, participants will have the opportunity to learn from CRV CONNX Recycling Ambassadors about proper recycling habits and El Dorado Nature Center staff will offer education-based activities.

The recycling drive will take place in the parking lot near the Opossum Patch picnic site and parking fees will be waived for participants. RMS Inc., a California corporation operating as a certified Collection Program owned by the California Grocers Association, has been providing services to retail operators, municipalities, and other businesses for over 30 years.

This New Year's event not only promotes responsible recycling habits but also supports a worthy cause in Long Beach. Community members are encouraged to participate and make a positive impact on both the environment and their local community.
