The debut single, co-written by Sumi X and Kiki T, is up for Message Song / Social Impact at the 2026 HIMA ceremony in Hollywood
LOS ANGELES - Californer -- "American Dream," the debut single from alt-pop artist Sumi X, has been nominated for a Hollywood Independent Music Award in the Message Song / Social Impact category. The 2026 HIMA main event takes place tonight, July 30, at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, California.
Released May 15, "American Dream" ( https://laurelanne.media/sumi-x-announces-new-s... ) is the title track from Sumi X's forthcoming debut EP American Tarot. It runs as mid-tempo electro-pop until the chorus, where military drums push up through the mix. The song sits with the erosion of the American Dream for people who were promised it and never got it, and underneath that, with the particular way that promise fails women.

"American Dream is the first song off my debut EP," Sumi X says. "I hope it helps people feel less alone in this terrifying moment in history and offers solidarity to keep fighting the good fight."
The Message Song / Social Impact nomination places the track in a category built for exactly the kind of writing Sumi X set out to do. She got tired of writing heartbreak songs while the world burned, so she wrote about the world instead.
"American Dream" was written by Sumi X and Kiki T with Kathryn Padlan, Alfred Cockrell, and Olivier Bassil, and produced by Jay Ives and Elliot Sorgen. The Kiki T writing credit connects two artists on the Laurelanne roster, both of whom left other lives to make pop music. Sumi X built and sold a federal consulting firm before a decision made during a retreat in Bali sent her toward music. Kiki T walked away from a doctoral program in cognitive neuroscience.
