WASHINGTON, July 15, 2025 ~ Teamsters at Republic Services have taken their strike to the next level this week, expanding their picket lines to Los Angeles and a major landfill in Ohio. This move comes as a response to the waste giant's refusal to offer fair wages, benefits, and contracts to its employees.

The strike, which was forced by Republic Services, will now affect over two million residents in Los Angeles. In Youngstown, Ohio, trucks and trains carrying 12 million pounds of trash per day from New York City and New Jersey will be unable to unload at one of the nation's largest landfills.

According to Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien, Republic Services is pushing its workforce too far. "It's shocking, and increasingly disgusting, how far Republic Services is willing to push its workforce," he stated. "Our members are everyday Americans performing essential services across our communities, but Republic is unwilling to offer workers good wages, decent benefits, or a fair contract."

Over 2,000 Republic Teamsters are currently on strike or honoring picket lines due to the company's illegal union-busting tactics and refusal to bargain in good faith. As a result of this strike, waste collections have been significantly disrupted for millions of Americans nationwide.

Victor Mineros, Director of the Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division, believes that it is time for Republic Services to come to their senses and make a strong offer for their employees. "If they fail in this simple task," he warned, "picket line extensions will continue and garbage will accumulate in more states."

Mineros also pointed out that Republic Services' actions are only delaying the inevitable. "Management knows there is only one way this fight ends - with a contract for every single Teamster who does the real, gross, unforgiving, and brutally hard work that these executives could never pretend to do," he stated.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters was founded in 1903 and currently represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For more information, visit Teamster.org or follow them on Twitter @Teamsters and on Facebook at Facebook.com/teamsters.
