LOS ANGELES - Californer -- Political writing is an art. But it's also sadly a dying art among young people. One quarter of the way into the twenty-first century, hard hitting, factual, compelling political and social edge writing is a fast-fading art. This is the age of video and computer games, snap chat, and reality TV. This is the age where many school systems do not emphasize the power of the written word and analytical analysis of issues.
That was certainly not true through much of the twentieth century. Then political and social analysis writing on the issues had been the norm for generations of writers. There is, though, still a crucial need to encourage and reward those young writers willing to put pen to paper (or in this age computer) and produce thoughtful, analytical, punchy, and potentially influential essays, op-eds, and think pieces on the compelling political and social issues of the day.

The Hutchinson Prize was created by noted political analyst Earl Ofari Hutchinson to serve as a spur and catalyst for high school and college age young people to put their pen to paper on the issues. The Hutchinson Prize is a way to say thank you to those young people who are willing to tackle the demanding craft of political writing.
The first Hutchinson Prize will be awarded on Hutchinson's birthday October 8, 2023. Submission requirement--one five-hundred-word op-ed or essay on a compelling political or social issue. Three judge panel. The prize is a certificate of Writing Excellence and a cash award of $1,000.00. The award will be made twice yearly.
