Bringing much-needed sustainability model to the toy industry.
OAKLAND, Calif. - Californer -- PlanToys, the global leader in sustainable toy manufacturing, announced today that celebrated second-hand children's marketplace, TOYCYCLE, will be the manufacturer's preferred recommerce partner effective immediately.
The Recommerce Partnership enables TOYCYCLE to ensure continued life for outgrown PlanToys' products. To do so, the two companies are creating a network of parents and retailers across the country to divert gently used toys from the waste stream. And at the same time bring quality, convenience, and reliability to families in secondary markets.
Both companies recognize the adverse environmental impact of discarded toys. Some studies suggest that as much as 80% of all toys end up in a landfill. The partnership will address the after-use phase of PlanToys products, closing the final loop of the product lifecycle and creating a circular and sustainable economy for toys. The companies hope the model will engender greater sustainability in the toy industry as a whole at a time when recommerce markets are growing rapidly.

Founder and CEO, Rhonda Collins, leads the TOYCYCLE team. She is a mother of twins and a graduate of both Y Combinator's Startup School, and The Batchery Accelerator. Collins started TOYCYCLE after experiencing first-hand the challenge of gearing up, and then gearing down as her kids grew.
"We had no more use for cradles after about five months, but we did need cribs at that point," says Collins. "And of course, the other gear and the toys – it all has to be swapped out every few months in the early years."
"The problem," Collins continues, "is offloading all that stuff in a short period of time when you're busy working and trying to raise kids." On the demand side she says, you can't always find what you need when you need it. Collins knew there had to be a better way and launched the TOYCYCLE marketplace, which offers quality used toys and baby gear, in 2019.
