OAKLAND, Calif., July 16, 2024 ~ Turnitin Launches AI Paraphrasing Detection Feature to Combat Plagiarism in Academic Writing
In a move to address the growing issue of plagiarism in academic writing, Turnitin has announced the launch of its AI paraphrasing detection feature. The leading provider of technology solutions in academic integrity aims to help educators and publishers identify instances where AI paraphrasing tools have been used to modify AI-generated text and avoid detection.
With the rise of generative AI tools, ensuring original critical thinking in education and research writing has become increasingly challenging. Students and researchers may use these tools to modify AI-generated text, leading educators and publishers to believe that the work is original. A recent study conducted by Tyton Partners found that students are more likely than educators and administrators to use generative AI tools on a regular basis.
Turnitin's new feature aims to address this issue by identifying instances where AI paraphrasing may have been used. This will enable educators and researchers to have constructive conversations with writers about ethical writing practices and proper paraphrasing techniques.

According to Annie Chechitelli, chief product officer at Turnitin, while AI has great potential in education, writers need to be transparent about their use of generative AI. Using AI paraphrasing on AI-generated content is a red flag for trying to hide the use of AI, which goes against the principle of transparency. Turnitin's goal is to provide tools and insights that preserve the value of original work.
The launch of this feature comes after Turnitin's successful release of its AI writing detector and report in early 2023. Leveraging over 25 years of experience in understanding and safeguarding academic writing, Turnitin has reviewed over 200 million papers since its launch. Of these papers, over 22 million (11%) had at least 20% AI writing present, while over six million (3%) had at least 80% AI writing present.
The new feature is seamlessly integrated into Turnitin Originality, providing users with a comprehensive experience. iThenticate users can also access it by licensing AI writing capabilities separately. When enabled, the feature automatically checks each submission for both AI writing and AI paraphrasing. It also highlights where within the submission a text spinner was likely applied to AI writing, giving insights into how the writing was constructed. Additionally, it provides an overall percentage of the document that was likely AI-generated, including a breakdown of text that was likely AI-generated and text that may have also been AI paraphrased.
