NORCROSS, Ga. - Californer -- The COVID-19 pandemic has produced huge challenges for healthcare process improvement experts, leading to innovative ideas that can improve patient care and streamline procedures.
Those ideas and expertise will be shared at the first virtual Healthcare Systems Process Improvement (HSPI) Conference on Feb. 24-26. Sponsored by the Society for Health Systems (SHS) – one of three societies of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) – HSPI 2021 offers a variety of education and networking opportunities.
Preconference workshops on Feb. 24 lead off a packed program of presentation tracks ranging from human factors, leadership and change management to quality and patient safety, research and sustainability. Also included are various awards, including the President's Award winners, scholarship awards and top teams in the SHS Student Simulation Competition sponsored by FlexSim.

"We're excited about our virtual option this year for both attendees and presenters," Lauren Todd, SHS incoming president, said on a recent episode of Problem Solved: The IISE Podcast at link.iise.org/podcast_s2e8. "We're looking forward to the ability to have global attendance and the diversity and extra perspectives that will provide."
Schedule highlights include two keynote presentations. Nathan Hurle, senior director of enterprise continuous improvement at the Cleveland Clinic, will discuss improvement efforts at the clinic, where he has spent 13 years. Michael J. Goldstein, M.D., director of organ transplantation and associate professor of surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, will talk about "Quality over Quantity: A recipe for creating sustainability and high reliability in organ transplantation." Goldstein has experience leading management teams to achieve strategic goals in both medical administration and healthcare delivery.
