LOS ANGELES - Californer -- Announcing the 23rd Annual Barringer Invitational Lecture Recipient Professor Amy Mainzer of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at University of Arizona, USA
Her presentation, Earth-Approaching Asteroids and Comets: Opportunity and Risk will be presented during the Meteorological Society Conference August 14, 2023 at 7pm in UCLA's Fowler Museum. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Since 1999, the Barringer Crater Company has sponsored a public lecture delivered by an invited speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society. These speakers often offer a broader perspective on the role of meteoritics and planetary science in the modern world.
Every year, The Barringer Crater Company sponsors the Barringer Medal, the Barringer Invitational Lecture, and travel grants for students to attend the annual Meteoritical Society meetings. The Meteoritical Society is a non-profit scholarly organization founded in 1933 to promote research and education in planetary science with emphasis on studies of meteorites and other extraterrestrial materials, including samples from space missions, that further our understanding of the origin and history of the solar system.

Barringer Crater, located in Arizona, is owned by The Barringer Crater Company, which strives to protect and maintain the site as a valuable scientific and cultural resource.
The story of The Barringer Meteorite Crater is a story about the collisions and impacts that have shaped the Earth and other planets in our solar system. But it is also a story about how we know what we know about craters, meteorites, and the planet we live on. The Crater is named for Daniel Moreau Barringer, a Philadelphia mining engineer who became convinced that the crater was the result of a large meteorite striking the earth, contradicting the most eminent scientists of his time. A self-taught geologist, Barringer spent several years studying the crater and providing the initial proof of its origin. Though he never found the fortune in meteoritic iron he was convinced lay beneath the floor of the crater, Barringer's theory of the crater's origin was eventually vindicated and accepted by the scientific community.
