AKCP, the world's oldest and largest supplier of networked wired and wireless sensor solutions has added a dew point calculation virtual sensor on the sensorProbe+ (SP+) platform.
LOS ANGELES - Californer -- Available to existing customers as a firmware update, the SP+ series of base units calculate dew point from temperature and humidity values. The input for the calculation is provided by an AKCP dual temperature and humidity sensor.
What is Dew Point?
Air holds moisture in the form of humidity. The amount of moisture it can hold is correlated with the temperature of the air. The dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes saturated (100% relative humidity). When this point is reached the air can no longer hold any more moisture in its gaseous state and condensation will occur.
Why monitoring Dew Point is important in the Data Center
Condensation causes water damage to structures and electronic equipment. ASHRAE standards state that the dew point should be maintained between 5.5°C (41.9°F) and 15°C (59°F). Maintaining correct relative humidity (RH) in a data center is important. If the RH is too low equipment becomes susceptible to electrostatic discharge (ESD). However, when humidity is too high, as humidity is related to the dew point, water condensation occurs which leads to equipment corrosion.

How is Dew Point Calculated?
There are several equations that can be used to approximate the dew point values. Some take into account air pressure as well. The AKCP dual temperature and humidity sensors provide all the information needed to calculate within +/- 1°C the dew point.
