LOS ANGELES, Sept. 25, 2024 ~ The Annenberg Foundation and Annenberg Learner have recently launched a comprehensive set of online tools to assist parents and educators in addressing the challenges of social media use and abuse among young people. These resources aim to prevent harm in communities by providing guidance on responsible social media usage.

The curated content, designed for teachers and parents to use with young people, will be exclusively available on Learner.org starting September 26th. This coincides with the premiere of "Social Studies," a documentary series directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Lauren Greenfield, which will air on FX and Hulu the following day. Wallis Annenberg, Chairman, President, and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation, served as an executive producer for the series.

In addition to the exclusive content on Learner.org, the Annenberg Foundation is also offering free access to the full Social Studies curriculum. This curriculum covers various concepts explored in the documentary series such as approval and feedback loops, body image, sexual exploitation, attention and distraction, comparison and "FOMO," fame and influence, identity, drug and alcohol use, social justice, and more. It consists of 12 modules with activities, discussion guides, and other resources specifically tailored for middle and high school students. Parents or caregivers can also download guides for discussing 11 related topics with additional resources at Learner.org/socialstudies.

Director Lauren Greenfield expressed her motivation behind creating this curriculum after working on "Social Studies." She believes that it is crucial to have open discussions about the challenges faced by today's youth due to social media. She hopes that this curriculum will be adopted in schools across the country through Annenberg Learner as a way to address the mental health crisis among young people.

Educator Rob Greenfield from Newton High School in Massachusetts developed the curriculum in collaboration with Annenberg Learner. He believes that raising awareness about social media's impact can help students develop a healthier relationship with technology. He also emphasizes the need for education on social media's role in various aspects of life, from cognition and relationships to democracy and disinformation.

Nati Rodriguez, Program Director at Annenberg Learner, highlighted the importance of adding resources to support teachers and parents in preparing young people for responsible social media use. She stated that for over 40 years, millions of educators have relied on Annenberg Learner's educational resources covering traditional subjects. With the increasing use of social media by children and young adults, they believe it is crucial to provide resources to address this issue.
