Assistant City Manager Linda F. Tatum Announces Retirement from City of Long Beach

Long Beach, CA ~ The City of Long Beach has announced the upcoming retirement of Assistant City Manager Linda F. Tatum. Ms. Tatum has served in the position since June 2020 and previously served as Director of the City's Development Services Department.

City Manager Tom Modica praised Ms. Tatum for her contributions to the organization, saying, "As Assistant City Manager, Linda has played an integral role in the operational and morale resiliency of our organization. She has led with compassion, dignity and inclusivity – she is a true public servant and dedicated leader. We are grateful for the influential impact she has made here in Long Beach and we wish her all the best as she begins an exciting new chapter of life in her retirement."

Ms. Tatum's career in the planning field was spent mostly in the public sector, serving in the Cities of Inglewood, Culver City and Santa Ana before joining Long Beach in 2015. As Assistant City Manager, she supported various functions within the Office of the City Manager, stepped in to perform duties of the City Manager when needed, led several high priority city initiatives, and supported its diverse workforce. Most notably, she managed a $40 million CARES Act program which provided critical funding for Long Beach's COVID-19 response and to support communities most impacted by COVID-19 as well as business recovery and resiliency. She also led its transition to a modern Police Oversight model when voters approved Measure E to establish an independent Police Oversight Director working with a Police Oversight Commission and close collaboration with the Office of the City Manager and Long Beach Police Department. In 2021, Ms. Tatum served as lead staff coordinating with Federal government for its Emergency Intake Shelter located at Long Beach Convention Center for unaccompanied migrant children. Additionally, she provided executive oversight and direction for implementation of its groundbreaking Framework for Reconciliation racial equity plan adopted in 2020.

Prior to serving as Assistant City Manager, Ms. Tatum was Director of Development Services where she oversaw Planning, Building Safety, Code Enforcement, Housing & Neighborhood Services as well as nonprofit affiliate Long Beach Community Investment Corporation (LBCIC). She was influential on an array of urban planning & development initiatives including overseeing development on Downtown waterfront; leading efforts for Land Use Element & Urban Design Elements updates; overseeing planning & permitting 1k+ affordable housing units & 5500+ market-rate housing across city; supporting planning & construction new Civic Center; entitlement private mid-block development; among other critical initiatives.

Ms. Tatum is an accomplished leader recognized nationally in planning field having served on Board Directors California Planning Foundation (CFP) 12+ years (8 years president); awarded APA California Chapter Distinguished Service Award 2013; serves national Planning Accreditation Board; California Planning Roundtable; Planners Emeritus Network; recently completed service national APA Foundation Board Directors; 2015 Rose Fellow Public Leadership Land Use sponsored Urban Land Institute/National League Cities; inducted American Institute Certified Planners Class Fellows 2018 - highest level recognition bestowed small number planning leaders throughout nation
